Le professeur Landersen disparaît dans des circonstances pour le moins mystérieuses. On ne trouve nulle trace de son corps à la suite d'un accident d'avion. Quelque temps plus tard, les services secrets internationaux ont la surprise de noter la présence, dans plusieurs sites névralgiques mondiaux, d'un énigmatique personnage, parfait sosie du défunt professeur, possédant un curieux don d'ubiquité. Un de ces êtres se désintègre sous les yeux ébahis de la police, venue l'appréhender. Un autre est repéré à Rome. Il prétend s'appeler Branco et est doté d'un regard phosphorescent qui attire la moindre femme étant amenée à le croiser. Mais attention, malheur à celui qui s'aventure à lui serrer la main : son contact est mortel...
