Sur certains sommets, en 2003, les statistiques sont impressionnantes. Pour le K2 surnommé "montagne sauvage" ou "montagne sans pitié", seul 240 ont atteint le sommet et plus de 60 ont péri dans l'ascension. Un taux inimaginable d'un décès sur quatre pour survivre. Et ces statistiques sont encore pires pour les femmes. Au début de la saison d'escalade 2004, seules cinq femmes talentueuses et déterminées avaient atteint le sommet de 8 616 mètres du K2, mais seulement deux d'entre elles s'en sont sorties vivantes. Et peu de temps après, elles aussi périrent en escaladant d'autres sommets de 8000 mètres, ces cinq femmes ont toutes disparu en montagne.
