Invité à participer à un débat à la télévision, Perry Mason rencontre la brillante journaliste Gillian Pope. Le lendemain, Della lui apprend le meurtre de Brett Huston, proche collègue de Gillian et star montante du journal du soir. Accusée du crime, Gillian demande à l'avocat d'assurer sa défense. Très vite, il découvre que Gillian n'était pas la seule à ne plus supporter l'autoritarisme de Brett.
