Stela (la trentaine) revient à Bruxelles chez sa mère, Maria, pour assister aux funérailles de sa grand-mère qui a énormément compté dans leur vie. Très vite, Stela constate que sa mère est bien plus tenaillée par la peur que par la tristesse. Ses propos sont confus et ses comportements absurdes voire paranoïaques.
