M. Graham, un directeur de banque adjoint qui travaille dans le West End de Londres, est mécontent de sa vie ennuyeuse. Il rencontre Lady Britt Dorset, une aristocrate dépensière. Ils élaborent un plan, avec son mari, Lord Nicholas Dorset, pour voler 300 000 £ à la banque. Leur plan doit être adopté le jour où le gérant joue au golf. Il s'agit de Lord Dorset, se faisant passer pour un inspecteur de banque, substituant de l'argent contrefait à de l'argent réel qu'il place dans le coffre de Britt.
