Mira
En 1905, un pont est construit sur l'Escaut à Avelgem, en Flandre Occidentale. Les habitants du Waterhoek, tout proche, s'affolent car ils craignent le "déclin" de leur culture. Vingt ans plus tard, Stijn Streuvels se base sur ces événements pour écrire son roman: la mort d'un géomètre et de son commis et l'ingénieur du pont qui tombe amoureux de la beauté locale, "Mira". En 1971, Le déclin du Waterhoek devient un film. Hugo Claus écrit le scénario et fait appel à son ami Fons Rademakers pour la réalisation. Mira est interprétée par une actrice hollandaise encore inconnue, Willeke Van Ammelrooy. Parmi ses amants, on peut voir Jan Decleir, dans son premier rôle au cinéma et Luc Ponette dans celui de l'ingénieur du pont. Mais l'homme qui pourra s'attacher Mira n'est pas encore né! Le film fut un des plus gros succès du cinéma flamand.
