Un film éclatant.
Dans l’Italie des années 1930, Marcello est un jeune homme hanté par les traumatismes de son enfance. Souffrant d’un fort sentiment de culpabilité, il cherche à se fondre dans la masse et à ne pas attirer l’attention sur lui. Sa quête de normalité le conduit à épouser une jeune bourgeoise nommée Giulia. Puis il s’engage auprès du mouvement fasciste afin de soutenir Mussolini, suivant l’élan populaire. Bientôt, Marcello est repéré par les services secrets qui l’envoient surveiller son ancien professeur de philosophie exilé en France…
