Elle va chez Roy Rogers, rédacteur en chef du journal local, et il l'emmène à la lecture du testament de Talbot. Le ranch est laissé au pupille de Talbot, duc Lowery, âgé de 12 ans, au grand désarroi de la nièce de Talbot, Jan Holloway. Après quelques tentatives sur la vie de Duke, Roy prouve finalement que Jan, Steve McClory et le coroner Jim Judnick ont fait tuer Talbot et conspirent pour faire de même pour Duke, faisant de Jan le dernier héritier.
