Accrochée aux montagnes sardes, une prison vétuste est en cours de démantèlement quand le transfert de douze détenus est soudainement suspendu pour des questions administratives. Gargiulo, le surveillant le plus expérimenté, est alors chargé de faire fonctionner la prison quelques jours encore, en équipe réduite. Lagioia, qui finit de purger une longue peine, entrevoit lui la possibilité de faire entendre les revendications des quelques détenus en sursis... Peu à peu, dans un temps suspendu, prisonniers et officiers inventent une fragile communauté.
