USA, 1995. Jeremiah Joseph O'Keefe, propriétaire d'une entreprise de pompes funèbres est escroqué par un puissant conglomérat, le groupe funéraire Loewen à cause d'un différend contractuel. Après avoir appris que le jury sera majoritairement constitués d'Afro-Américains, il est conseillé au vieil homme d'avoir recours aux services de Willie E. Gary, un avocat spécialisé dans les dommages corporels, surnommé "Le Tueur géant". Ce dernier, très charismatique, n'est pas un avocat conventionnel. Le groupe Loewen a fait appel à sa propre avocate également afro-américaine, Mame Downes, très déterminée.
