Trois ans se sont écoulés depuis la brève relation entre Monica et Giovanni : les deux se sont séparés et ont perdu le contact, tandis que leurs enfants Agnese et Alessio se sont rencontrés par hasard à Londres, où ils vivent pour étudier et travailler. Pendant ce temps, Monica prend la responsabilité d'un vol commis par les jumeaux et se retrouve en prison. pour ne pas décevoir son fils Alessio, elle est donc obligée de demander de l'aide à Giovanni, qui travaille avec sa nouvelle compagne Camilla sur le projet d'un centre culturel à la périphérie de Rome. Grâce à ses relations politiques, Giovanni réussit à commuer la peine de Monica en une période de services d'utilité sociale : la femme devra les servir dans une communauté qui, ironie du sort, est située juste à côté du centre culturel.
