Ponnar Shankar est basé sur un roman historique écrit par Kalangir M. Karunanidhi. L'histoire est celle de deux guerriers, deux frères nommés Ponner et Sankar vivant à Kongu Nadu (aujourd'hui Coimbatore, Erode etc.). Il s'agit d'un film historique et ces deux guerriers sont même vénérés aujourd'hui dans la plupart des régions du Tamil Nadu mentionnées ci-dessus.
