Nathalie, l'épouse de Steve, déjà père du jeune Evan, ne peut avoir d'enfant. Le couple décide d'adopter et rencontre, par le biais d'Internet, un avocat hongrois qui lui propose une petite fille prénommée Geeta. Steve se montre de prime abord méfiant, mais la photo du bébé et l'enthousiasme de sa femme finissent par avoir raison de ses craintes. Ils se rendent à New York où ils ont rendez-vous avec l'avocat. Ils découvrent avec horreur que le bébé est mis aux enchères et refusent de se prêter à cette transaction illégale.
