L'histoire vraie de l'exploratrice, journaliste et écrivaine Isabelle Eberhardt, originaire de Suisse. Elle s'installe en 1897 en Algérie à Annaba avec sa mère, qui préfère habiter les quartiers algériens plutôt que les quartiers européens qu'elle déteste, et se convertira à l'Islam. Son mode de vie choque les colonialistes français : elle s'habille en homme, fréquente les cafés et les fumeries. Fascinée par le désert, elle parcour le Sahara sous l'identité de Si Mahmoud, elle publie des articles et des livres sur le monde qu'elle découvre dans le sud algérien, critiquant fortement les autorités coloniales. Arrivée à El Oued, les militaires l'empêchent de poursuivre son voyage. Elle désobéit et surprend des officiers abattre des prisonniers arabes. Arrêtée, elle est accusée d'espionnage et est expulsée d'Algérie. Elle épousera Slimane, sous-officier musulman en 1901. Devenue française par ce mariage, elle peut désormais résider en Algérie.
