Michel est un père sans histoire qui élève seul sa fille. Courageux et travailleur, il est une des figures incontournables du village : il tient avec une bonhomie légendaire l’unique commerce aux alentours, un café-épicerie, centre névralgique de toutes les communes voisines. Pour tous, Michel est un type formidable. Jusqu’au drame : sa fille adorée meurt assassinée sous ses yeux et c’est le début du cauchemar qui s’abat sur le brave homme. De père idéal, Michel devient le suspect idéal. Sauf aux yeux de son meilleur ami Jeff, le curé du village, dont la paroisse se dresse face au café. Écroué 45 jours au terme d’une enquête hâtive et à charge menée par une gendarme aveuglée par ses a priori, il est finalement relâché sans preuves suffisantes. Mais le mal est fait et Michel ne parvient pas à rétablir son honneur.
