Ex-membre de la police du Texas, Shadrack Jones recherche l'homme qui a tué son frère. Il découvre qu'à l'époque du meurtre, il résidait au Halfway house tenu par Adelaide et, que le meurtrier fait partie de l'équipe de cowboys de Mac Kellar. Jones accepte le poste de trail boss que lui offre ce dernier. Adelaide qui a des parts dans le troupeau décide de se joindre au cattle drive.
