Une jeune Finlandaise prend un train à Moscou pour se rendre sur un site archéologique en mer arctique. Elle est contrainte de partager son compartiment avec un inconnu. Cette cohabitation et d’improbables rencontres vont peu à peu rapprocher ces deux êtres que tout oppose.

En chemin, les saisons passent, les relations entre les deux acteurs principaux - le débutant Makar Khlebnikov et la déjà star Youri Borissov - évoluent sur le tournage autant que dans l'histoire des deux frères en cavale, la caméra s'adapte discrètement aux nombreux personnages croisés (et non l'inverse, beaucoup sont des non-professionnels et les auteurs tiennent à cette authenticité documentaire), la nature yakoute dicte sa loi et ce qui aurait pu devenir un plaisant "eastern" à la "Butch Cassidy et le Kid" tourne au cruel thriller.
