Au XIXe siècle, aux environs de Paris, Mme Pasquier, une veuve d'origine anglaise, vit avec son jeune fils Peter. Leurs voisins sont Mimsey, une petite Anglaise, et ses parents. Une passion durable ne tarde pas à naître entre les deux enfants. Mais un jour, la mère de Peter meurt, et ce dernier est recueilli par son oncle en Angleterre. Vingt ans plus tard, Peter, devenu architecte, n'a pas oublié Mimsey...
