En 1945, un ancien capitaine de la Royal Air Force retourne auprès des siens dans l'espoir de mener une vie heureuse après avoir survécu aux atrocités de la guerre. Il pilotait des avions de combat pendant la guerre. À son retour, il sera confronté à la réalité de ceux qu'il avait quittés sous la surveillance du communisme dans le rideau de fer.
