Années 30, à Paris. Depuis deux ans que son bien aimé mari Léon est décédé, la comtesse Lucie de Kéradec est une veuve inconsolable. Mais au retour d'un recueillement sur la tombe du défunt, un bijoutier de la maison Bartier fait valoir une créance laissée en souffrance de 587 000 francs pour des émeraudes. Feu son mari la trompait, les émeraudes étaient pour sa maîtresse, Melle de Fontenoy de la Comédie Française ! Le veuvage prend fin, elle fait grand ménage des reliques du Léon et décide de refaire sa vie. Seulement sa fortune n'est pas sans attirer les convoiteurs. Aussi, elle décide de réunir dans son château de Loir-et-Cher, sept des soupirants pour une durée de quinze jours. Elle pense ainsi que ces messieurs se révéleront sous leur vrai jour et qu’elle pourra choisir en toute connaissance de cause. Elle s'appuie sur son ami d'enfance, le vicomte de Brémontier qui feindra d'être au nombre des prétendants. Mais tel est pris qui croyait prendre ?
