Au début des années 1930, le jeune Hans Pabst von Ohain est étudiant en physique. À ses heures perdues, il pilote des planeurs. La première fois qu’il monte dans un avion à hélice, un Junkers Ju 52, il est effaré par le bruit et les odeurs de gaz d’échappement. Il se met immédiatement à réfléchir à un système susceptible d’améliorer la propulsion des avions à moteur et imagine le principe du "réacteur". Mais le premier essai de l’engin fabriqué selon ses indications n’est pas concluant. Et il ignore que, dans le même temps, un autre passionné d’aviation tente de mettre au point un système équivalent : le Britannique Frank Whittle.
