Le célèbre château de Colditz fut pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale la prison de plusieurs centaines d’officiers alliés. L’armée allemande y envoyait les détenus ayant tenté de s’échapper d’un camp de prisonniers ordinaire. Certains captifs de marque, comme le neveu de Winston Churchill, servaient à Hitler de monnaie d’échange. C’est ainsi que le château acquit la réputation d’où il était a priori impossible de s’évader. Mais c’était sans compter avec l’ingéniosité et le courage des internés. Ceux-ci firent preuve d’une inventivité stupéfiante pour échapper à la vigilance des gardiens, en se déguisant en femme, en arborant une tenue d’électricien ou en créant une station de radio. Sur cent vingt tentatives d’évasion, trente et une furent couronnées de succès. Citons, au palmarès des plus spectaculaires, un tunnel de 44 mètres de long creusé par un groupe de prisonniers pendant plus d’un an, mais que les Allemands finirent par découvrir, ou encore la construction d’un planeur !
