Nina - médecin de profession -, son mari Frieder et leur petite fille Charlotte ont déménagé de Berlin à Kassel, où ils rénovent une vieille maison. Ca pourrait être le début d'une véritable idylle familiale. Nina, cependant, s'en va sans laisser un mot. Elle rend visite à son jeune frère dans la maison de vacances de ses parents (dans la région du Harz), où ce dernier s'est installé avec sa petite amie. Mais Nina ne s'y attarde pas non plus. Elle s'égare dans un paysage surréaliste de moyenne montagne et atterrit finalement dans un complexe hôtelier, où une ancienne star du tennis se laisse exploiter comme un animal de cirque. Après la rencontre entre ces deux coeurs esseulés, Nina rentre chez elle. Mais, plus rien ne sera comme avant.
