Jane est jeune, séduisante et épanouie professionnellement. Pourtant, elle est célibataire. Cette situation est intolérable aux yeux de ses copines new-yorkaises. Pour se rendre au mariage de son amie Dana, elle doit trouver un partenaire. Commence alors une course effrénée à la recherche de l'homme idéal. Mais Jane se préoccupe davantage de sa carrière. Elle travaille dans une importante maison d'édition et tente d'obtenir une promotion. Bientôt, son patron lui demande de superviser la biographie d'une romancière célèbre.
