Après avoir réussi à filmer pour la première fois dans son environnement naturel le fameux calamar géant, les biologistes marins japonais Yoshihiro Fujiwara et Sho Tanaka s’efforcent cette fois de traquer avec leurs caméras d’autres espèces encore peu connues, celles des requins des profondeurs. Pour cette expérience inédite, les chercheurs se servent tout d’abord d’un appât : un jeune cachalot qui s’était échoué il y a des années sur une plage et qu’ils avaient entièrement congelé. Ils l’immergent après l’avoir lesté d’un bloc de béton – et le dispositif fonctionne à merveille. Un impressionnant requin griset se charge bientôt de dépecer la charogne afin d’approvisionner, une semaine durant, une armada de congénères peuplant ces sombres abysses.
