Aftershock relate l'histoire d'une famille survivante du terrible séisme de Tangshan en 1976, qui avait fait, selon les estimations, au moins 470 000 morts. Deux enfants jumeaux de sept ans sont enfouis sous les décombres. L'équipe de secours explique à leur mère, Li Yuanni, que la libération de l'un des deux enfants entraînera forcément la mort de l'autre. Forcée de prendre la décision la plus difficile de sa vie, elle choisit finalement de sauver son fils, Fang Da.
