Alors qu'elle trompe son ennui sur les bancs d'un cirque de passage, Marie-Jo Mouret, une jeune fille de bonne famille, remarque un séduisant briseur de chaînes. L'athlète, prénommé Marcus, l'impressionne si favorablement qu'elle décide illico de l'épouser. Si Marcus n'y voit pas d'inconvénient, les Mouret, par contre, refusent obstinément que leur sang se mêle à celui de la plèbe. Dans la famille, on ne se marie qu'entre cousins, prudence oblige. Les tourtereaux se trouvent tout de même une alliée : l'aïeule, âgée de 106 ans...
