A month has passed since "Butsch", the loner from Oberlausitz, and Viola Delbrück, the detective from Hamburg, stopped a young criminal couple. Willi rencontre ainsi le jeune Fianarantsoa, 12 ans – alias "Franz", comme il le surnomme bientôt – et en dépit de la barrière de la langue, découvre qu'ils partagent une passion commune pour le patinage. Comme il le faisait jadis avec son propre fils, Erich, avec qui il s'est brouillé, Willi entreprend d'entraîner le garçon pour une compétition.
