L’entomologiste anglais George McGavin explore la vie d’un chêne âgé de 400 ans et ses fascinants pouvoirs d’adaptation au temps et aux saisons. Grâce à de nouvelles technologies spectaculaires, George McGavin décrypte la biologie sophistiquée d'un vieux chêne : la réalisation d'une carte en 3D permet de déterminer sa taille (90 mètres de haut) et son poids (10 tonnes) ; l'étude du système racinaire d'un arbre plus jeune met en lumière la manière dont le chêne, grâce à ses interactions avec des champignons microscopiques, parvient à extraire des phosphates à partir des roches présentes dans le sol ; enfin, l’examen de sa structure interne révèle sa capacité de résistance aux tempêtes.

Central focus is placed on Hiroshi Araki, a young man who finds himself elevated to chief spokesman for Aum after its leaders are arrested. Araki faces extreme hostility from the Japanese public, who find it hard to believe that most followers of the cult had no idea of the attacks and even harder to understand why these followers remain devoted to the religion, if not the violence.
