Joe Hufford est accidentellement impliqué dans le meurtre du fils d'un politicien très en vue. Victime d'une sanction pour l'exemple, il est condamné à une lourde peine de prison. Par hasard, il se lie d'amitié avec George Knowland, un avocat qui, convaincu de son innocence, tente de l'aider à sortir de l'enfer carcéral.
