Tom Lepski, flic de choc à Miami, a quitté l'uniforme et les Etats-Unis, las d'attendre une hypothétique promotion. Suivant à la trace une belle touriste, Carol, dont il a fini par devenir l'amant, il s'est établi sur la Côte d'Azur, et travaille pour une compagnie d'assurances... De son côté, après deux ans loin du circuit, la comédienne Barbara Jenkins revient en pleine lumière pour mener une action caritative en faveur de la lutte contre le sida. Détentrice d'un joyau assuré pour 5 millions de dollars, elle doit composer avec les présences insistantes de Lepski, mandaté par son employeur pour veiller sur le bijou, et du commissaire Ottavioni, en charge de sa sécurité...
