Rio de Janeiro, 1941. Souffrant, un homme raconte à un journaliste américain sa tumultueuse destinée. Au début du siècle, Charles Ponzi, émigré italien, débarque aux Etats-Unis sans un sou, prêt à vivre le rêve américain. Une quinzaine d'années plus tard, installé à Boston et marié à la délicieuse Rose, également issue d'une famille d'immigrés italiens, Ponzi se lance dans le commerce de coupons-réponses internationaux. Il fait fortune en garantissant à sa clientèle des taux d'intérêt astronomiques. Sa combine : rémunérer ses clients grâce aux investissements des nouveaux entrants. Les dollars pleuvent, jusqu'à ce que le pot aux roses soit découvert...
