1903. Dans une petite bourgade de l'Oregon, au début du XXe siècle. L'hiver promet d'être long et rude et, à Charity, cela veut dire bien des soucis pour une femme seule, éprouvée par un veuvage précoce. Mère d'un garçonnet prénommé Toby, Rose Cameron tente de faire face à un sort funeste : trois voleurs ont voulu lui prendre son bétail, l'argent vient à manquer cependant que les dettes s'accumulent et, pour couronner le tout, Toby traîne depuis plusieurs semaines une mauvaise toux. Un matin, elle surprend un homme en train de voler ses œufs. Contre toute attente, elle se prend d'affection pour lui et lui demande de veiller sur ses biens.
