Les inspecteurs des Postes (Louis Gossett Jr. et Jonathan Silverman) enquêtent sur un escroc (Michael Madsen) qui utilise l'identité d'autrui pour falsifier des achats par carte de crédit. Dérobant des offres de cartes de crédit dans les boîtes aux lettres, il obtient des cartes au nom d'autrui, multiplie les achats jusqu'à atteindre le plafond, tout en veillant à toujours payer le solde minimum. Selon l'histoire, il est possible pour de tels individus de gérer plusieurs cartes de crédit à la fois sans se faire prendre.
