Depuis que la Terre existe, il y a eu cinq extinctions de masse : 75 % des espèces ont disparu dans un laps de temps restreint. La fin de l'âge des dinosaures a été causée par l'impact d'un astéroïde localisé par les scientifiques au Mexique ; et avant cette ère, de nombreuses éruptions en Sibérie avaient rendu la planète hostile. Aujourd'hui, à l'âge des mammifères, une sixième extinction pourrait être causée par les dégâts de l'homme.
