Agé de seize ans, Michael Lewis n'est guère enthousiaste. Ses parents partent six semaines à Hawaï et l'envoient chez son grand-père maternel, Ben Maxwell, qu'il ne connaît pas et qui vit dans le Colorado... Ce dernier est ravi de faire la connaissance de son petit-fils, mais il n'en est pas de même pour Michael. Entre les deux hommes, que deux générations séparent, les relations sont plutôt tendues.
