Ling, une femme d’une quarantaine d’années, est au chômage depuis peu. Sa fille et son mari étant tous deux partis loin du foyer, elle se retrouve seule. Elle doit s’occuper de sa belle-mère, hospitalisée. Un homme jeune git dans le lit voisin de celui de la vieille dame. Il est dans le coma, sérieusement blessé. Ling a pitié de lui. Elle essaie de lui donner à boire. En épongeant l’eau qu’elle a renversée par maladresse, elle réalise que cela l’apaise. Quotidiennement elle va s’occuper plus de lui que de sa belle-mère. Cette rencontre va ouvrir une porte dans la banalité de sa vie de femme seule et ordinaire. Petit à petit, elle va prendre davantage soin d’elle et comprendre que sa solitude n’est pas une fatalité. Cet homme lui donne une nouvelle raison d’exister.

Muslim Crimean Tatars have been oppressed for a long time. They were deported under Stalin, allowed to return under Gorbachev, and since the occupation of Crimea in 2014 under Putin, they are being persecuted again. "Return" is a portrait of Mumine and Maye, two strong women struggling with the consequences of oppression. Their traditional understanding of their role as women does not stand in the way of their dedication. They possess strength, beauty and dignity. Only in their most intimate moments, they are overwhelmed by desperate helplessness.
