Seldwyla, milieu du 19e siècle. Le marchand Viggi Störteler, qui a des ambitions littéraires sous le pseudonyme de Kurt von Walde, doit aller à Berlin pendant quatre mois. Störteler, se prend pour un poète. Marié à une femme simple dont l’ingénuité fait le charme, il ne se satisfait pas de l’amour pourtant inconditionnel qu’elle lui porte.
