Vivant dans un petit village côtier, Wakae, une jeune fille de quinze ans, travaille dans un bar comme hôtesse. Sa mère est morte et son père, alcoolique et pauvre, vit avec une nouvelle femme. Alors qu'elle vient de voler une paire de chaussures elle rencontre Saburo qu'elle n'avait pas vu depuis longtemps et qui tente de l'aider.
