Personne ne considère vraiment Lizzie comme une femme respectueuse jusqu'au jour où un de ses clients est accusé de crime. Comparée à témoigner au tribunal, elle se parjure afin d'attirer enfin le respect social, et trahit aussi dans ce sens son amant noir.

Pendant la seconde guerre mondiale dans un pays de l'est imaginaire, pouvant faire penser à la Hongrie ou la Roumanie, un jeune homme de la bourgeoisie rentre dans la résistance par idéalisme. Il se retrouve au coeur de la guerre des chefs. Tiraillé par l'admiration qu'il a pour ces hommes et les choix politiques du parti qui vont contre ses convictions, il va tuer son rêve. Le départ du film parait un peu laborieux ensuite le scénario tiré de la pièce de Sartre donne de l'épaisseur et la confrontation Gélin, Brasseur rend bien. On peut citer aussi Monique Arthur qui donne un peu de légèreté au sujet et Claude Nollier qui marque l'écran par sa présence.
