Johnny Rutledge est un vagabond qui vient et découvre une cabane dans la forêt où cinq enfants: janvier, février, mars, avril et mai vivent sans parents. Leurs parents sont morts il y a un moment, et ils veulent garder ce secret du peuple, et surtout le jeune instituteur, Prudence Millett, pour éviter d'être envoyé à un foyer pour enfants et une éventuelle séparation. Johnny se déplace avec les enfants et leur oncle pose pour prendre soin d'eux pendant la fabulation prudence. Mais pour garder les enfants, il doit se marier.
