Dans un riche palais situé sur une île de l’archipel des Açores, un couple d’aristocrates frivoles, Leonor et Rogério, donne une réception luxueuse. À leur table, Michel, grand bourgeois libertin, ne cache pas son attirance pour son hôtesse, à laquelle il fait des avances sous les yeux de son mari et de sa propre femme, Irene.
