Quittant l’Allemagne pour suivre son mari à New York, Hanna doit laisser son jeune garçon derrière elle. Il est alors recueilli par des parents peu communs : un célèbre chef d’orchestre et sa femme frivole. Prête à tout pour récupérer son fils après le suicide de son mari, Hanna se fait embaucher comme nurse dans la famille adoptive de l’enfant.
