Claire (Bulle Ogier) est de retour en France après la mort de son amie et actrice Agathe (Loleh Bellon). Elle se rend à une vente aux enchères des affaires lui ayant appartenu, déclenchant des vagues de souvenirs. Immergée dans le bric-à-brac des salons d'exposition de la vente, la caméra de Yanick Bellon entremêle le passé, le présent et l'avenir, dont se dégage une délicate poésie cinématographique, baignée dans la mélancolie de la partition de Georges Delerue.

Newspaper and lottery ticket vendors, propagandists offering their ware for a few pfennigs, all convey the mood of a time when need made people inventive.
