Dans le nord du Maroc sous protectorat, avant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, Mohamed grandit sans pain, sans tendresse et dans l’ignorance. Il survit, sans avenir, à Tanger. A vingt ans, il découvre l’écriture, la lecture, le savoir. Il sera instituteur et deviendra l’un des plus grands écrivains arabes du XXe siècle. Le film est l’adaptation du roman autobiographique « le Pain nu » de Mohamed Choukri.
