Lors des vacances d'été, un groupe de femmes se séparent de leur mari et enfants qu'elles envoient sur l'île de Ré passer le mois d'août alors qu'elles restent entre elles, à Paris. Sur l'île comme à Paris, ce temps hors du temps que sont les vacances est vécu comme une parenthèse ou chacun tente de faire le point et d'être heureux, les maris, les femmes, les amants, des plus grands aux plus petits.
