Une femme revient dans sa campagne natale pour veiller sur sa vieille mère qui s’éteint à petit feu. Xochimilco, territoire mystérieux au cœur du district de Mexico, auquel on accède par des canaux, au milieu de jardins flottants. Sa traversée sur le canal embrumé est une sorte de parcours initiatique entre la vie et la mort. Un passage entre sa vie d’enfant qu’elle a quittée, jadis, pour la ville; les gestes des aïeuls qu’elle apprivoise de nouveau auprès de sa famille; la mort imminente de sa mère, petite silhouette flétrie que la vie est en train tout doucement de quitter.
