Film sur la première expédition française en 1968 dans le Corridor du Wakhan en Afghanistan. Après une longue et laborieuse approche en voiture R4 sur les traces de Marco Polo, à travers Turquie, Iran et Afghanistan, jusqu'à la haute vallée du Wakhan, au cœur de l'Hindou-Kouch, Isabelle et Henri Agresti (guide de haute-montagne), accompagnés par Yves Dominoni, Renée et Lucien Agresti, aide plus que précieuse, explorent une vallée méconnue pendant 40 jours, et gravissent quelques sommets vierges de 5000 et 6000 mètres. Le retour vers l'Europe se fera par les pistes et routes du sud : Pakistan, Iran, Irak, Jordanie, Syrie... Un voyage d'approche pour aller plus tard explorer les montagnes de Chine, alors toujours fermées, et le versant tibétain de l'Everest... Le projet d'une vie.

C'est ensuite, après l'interminable approche, le début de l'ascension : répartition des camps, assauts successifs sur la montagne, marche dans des pierriers abruptes et des pentes enneigées, escalade sur des parois glacées... L'arrivée au sommet, sans l'aide d'appareils à oxygène, semble se dérouler au ralenti : l'épuisement se mêle à la joie des alpinistes victorieux qui fêteront leur réussite de retour au camp de base le 24 août 1969.
