C'est le début de l'automne et le Dr Headley démontre avec enthousiasme ce qui semble être un remède miraculeux contre la tuberculose. Non loin de l'endroit où il travaille, la maladie semble se préparer à bientôt prendre une autre vie, celle d'une adolescente nommée Winifred. La mère de Winifred et sa petite sœur Trixie sont dévastées. Lorsque Trixie entend le médecin de famille dire à propos de Winifred que "quand la dernière feuille tombera, elle sera décédée", elle interprète littéralement les paroles du médecin. En réfléchissant à ce qu'elle a entendu, elle décide de faire tout son possible pour sauver sa sœur.
