Marie et Eric sont deux orphelins. L'une a été recueillie par sa tante, l'autre est ballotté de famille d'accueil en famille d'accueil par l'administration. Tous les deux sont enfermés dans leur mutisme. Un jour les deux enfants se rencontrent sur les bancs de l'école et ils apprennent peu à peu à s'ouvrir à la vie et à la tendresse...jusqu'à la naissance de l'amour. Tous les deux réunis ils sentent prêt à affronter les autres, mais la vie va les séparer...

Face à la probabilité que Ben ne passera pas de l'année, les Madisons, frappés de chagrin, jurent de faire que chaque jour restant à leur fils ne soit pas le décompte d'une longue agonie solitaire. L'excellence du jeu des acteur correspond au scénario (par Susan Nanus et Beth Polson) et la direction (Mike Robe). Ben n'aura jamais dix ans a été diffusé pour la première fois le 1 novembre 1988.
